Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or maxillofacial tissues using compatible substitutes.

  • Simply put, prosthodontists are trained dental specialists in the areas of dentistry that include dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, partials, cosmetic dentistry and temporomandibular joint disfunction.
  • It is important to understand that there are no designated separate specialties for cosmetic dentistry and implant dentistry!
  • With respect to cosmetic dentistry - all dentistry should look good! The prosthodontist is that individual specialist who has the post graduate training to make significant improvements in your appearance and smile!
  • Implant dentistry is one of the most complex aspects of dental treatment (when dental implants were first researched in Sweden in the mid 1960's the key team members were the prosthodontists and the oral surgeons!). The diagnosis and treatment planning of dental implant therapy is absolutely crucial to the long term success of implant treatments. The "quarterback" for these treatments must be someone who has the training to plan and carry out these complex treatments. That is the Prosthodontist. The implant team includes the Prosthodontist, Oral Surgeon, Periodontist, Dental Assistant, Dental Hyggienist and Dental Lab Technician.
